Hello.

Needing a passport for a house purchase rather than holiday - hoped you lovely people would be able to assist :)

It expired August last year and I kept intended to renew but *shrugs* I now have absolutely no idea where it is other than 'in the house somewhere'...

Just made an offer on a house and don't have a driving licence so need to replace sooner than later...

There are forms for if you lost your passport, and forms for if your passport has expired - not sure what I do given it's lost AND expired?

Thank you kindly

ETA: Update at post 4 with solution for anyone else who's in the same boat.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

House Bought July 2020 - 19 years 0 months remaining on term
Next Step: Bathroom renovation booked for January 2021
Goal: Keep the bigger picture in mind...

You will need to get a NEW passport.

As far as the passport office is concerned, the lost/expired passport is of no concern to them and will not be replaced.

Get searching if you need it for ID !

I believe you need to fill in the lost passport form first to get a reference, once you have that you can renew it. They won't renew unless you either have your old passport to send back or have reported it lost.

An expired passport is still a valid form of ID so they will want to know where it is.
Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear

Thanks to peachyprice who had the right advice.

Web-chatted with the passport office via 'speak to an advisor' here: https://www.gov.uk/passport-advice-line

The advisor kindly advised me to:

    - use the online form to report the passport lost: https://www.loststolenpassport.service.gov.uk/report/passport-holder;

    - Then to complete this form for a replacement passport - when they replace a lost passport you receive a new full 10 year passport: https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/replace

    - The only difference between renewing and replacing is the need for someone to verify the photo - which can also be done online by email: https://www.gov.uk/confirm-identity-online-for-passport-application

Tomorrow I'm getting a new digital photo, then I can complete the form - apparently the current turnaround time for replacements is about 3 weeks.

The turnaround time at the moment is about a week. They give the time as 3 weeks but it doesn’t normally take that long. If you can still be recognised from the photo in your old passport it doesn’t really matter about the occupation of the digital referee. They will get sent an email asking them to Verify some details about you. Just make sure you get a photo taken against a plain light coloured background and there are no shadows either on your face or around your head. Best thing to do it get it done in a Booth that gives you a digital code that you enter on the application form. If your photo gets rejected you will receive an email with a link asking you to upload a new one.
  • If you pay £200 and have all the paperwork they will do it there and then on the spot

Premier service is not available for a lost passport.

Yes it makes no difference if it’s expired. Lost damaged and children’s passport can’t go through the premium service. Fastest service is the fast track which can take up to a week

    Yes, about a week.
I applied online on 5th January, sent the old passport off the next day, and I have just received my new one today, 13th.
I was also very impressed with the notifications......I got a text and an email at every step of the process, putting me in the picture as to what was happening. Very reassuring.
